Vitamin B Helps Prevent Memory Loss
Finally the Best Vitamin Supplement for those of us concerned about early memory loss has been found. It was confirmed by some positive results from a survey done by the Department of Pharmacology at Oxford University.
A trial was conducted on 168 volunteers with mild memory problems. Half of them were given high doses of Vitamin B complex while the other group took a placebo.
Vitamin B is found naturally in meat, eggs and dairy products and the body normally absorbs enough for optimum health. But prolonged use of antibiotics can destroy the intestinal bacteria necessary for the absorption process. Vitamin 12 is essential for the formation of red blood cells which carry the oxygen in the bloodstream. Lack of oxygen to the brain can lead to neuron damage and increase the risk of dementia.
In the test, the brain shrinkage of those receiving the Vitamin B, was restricted to .76% a year while those receiving the placebo shrank by 1.08% a year.
One 80 year old had one tablet a day with his breakfast for two years as part of the trial. He said: “It seemed to arrest my memory decline. But when I stopped taking it at the end of the trial and I noticed that after a few months my memory was getting worse.”
Vitamin B1 (thiamin) is found in whole grains, nuts, beans, egg yolk, fruit and vegetables. A mild deficiency of thiamin can impair the body’s ability to metabolise carbohydrates. While severe deficiency can cause various nervous orders and severe memory loss.
High doses of Vitamin B can reduce brain shrinkage by between 30% and 53% as measured by advanced magnetic resonance imaging techniques.
A word of warning though from Prof David Smith who emphasises that people should not take high doses of B vitamins, although the Best Vitamin Supplement to help control memory loss, without consulting their doctor first.
